The population of English Learners (ELs) in classrooms continues to rise as indicated by recent statistics. We must recognize that some of those students may also be diagnosed with a language-based learning disability (LBLD). How can educators address the needs of these diverse learners? This seminar will provide a brief overview of second language acquisition and the complex nature of assessing ELs. Participants will engage in activities to understand how their students’ cultural backgrounds and past educational experiences impact learning. Finally, we will explore how educators can support ELs’ development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills across all grades and content areas using instructional models such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Landmark’s Teaching Principles™.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Explain typical language acquisition and stages of second language acquisition
  • Describe key components in assessing ELs with learning disabilities
  • Create activities to better understand students’ cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Use effective instructional strategies to support ELs with LD

Massachusetts Educators: This seminar meets the professional re-licensure requirement for “at least 15 PDPs related to Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) or English as a Second Language (ESL).”
