This 1-day workshop will guide educators through the practical intricacies of language arts unit planning while incorporating different study skills and teaching strategies. Participants will be instructed on sequential planning, designed to help their students progress from learning thematic vocabulary words to writing various sentence types and eventually composing paragraphs. Methods to seamlessly integrate background knowledge into the classroom, connecting literature and real-world examples, will be a focus. Participants will have the opportunity to view a completed unit to use as a model when developing their own language arts unit for the upcoming school year. During this seminar, participants will build a library of templates and create a balance of collaborative and independent activities.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Design a comprehensive language arts unit that progresses seamlessly from word level skills to paragraph construction
- Implement diverse instructional strategies
- Generate meaningful activities that integrate curriculum and written expression skills
- Understand and use written and oral expression templates
- Design effective homework assignments that reinforce classroom learning, providing students with opportunities for independent practice and skill application
- Integrate background knowledge into language arts units by connecting literature, real-world examples, and interdisciplinary content
- Develop their own language arts units for immediate implementation in the upcoming school year

Materials
Participants should bring a thematic writing unit they currently teach or information about a unit they hope to teach in the future, which will be used during the course.
