The development of numeracy is a complex process that involves the interplay of quantities, symbols, and language. Research shows that the ability to connect quantities with their spoken and written labels is necessary for arithmetic skill development. WoodinMath methodologies focus on fostering these connections while teaching facts and procedures within the context of conventional K-8 curriculum standards. By utilizing reasoning strengths and combining whole-to-part processing with gross-motor kinesthetic therapies, we can effectively compensate for deficits in working memory, expressive language mechanisms, and executive function. WoodinMath graphic organizers are designed to support working memory and facilitate meaningful comparisons, leading to accurate oral and written expression of mathematical facts and procedures. Gross-motor activities allow students to interact with these graphic organizers without being limited by fine motor output challenges. This approach benefits all students, particularly those with specific learning difficulties.
It’s important to scaffold success for all, including those neurodivergent individuals within the general education population. This course will benefit those who teach the four basic operations, fractions, proportions and percentages and the underlying facts and concepts that drive them.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Compensate for executive function and working memory deficits by teaching math concepts and procedures in an integrated manner using whole-to-part strategies.
- Present math concepts referenced by the Common Core Math Standards from the primary reference point of students using multiple modalities.
- Access and download free online materials from the WoodinMath website for classroom use.
Level
This seminar is appropriate for educators at the elementary and middle school levels.
Materials
Materials will be provided on-site.
Graduate Credit
