Webinar Description
This webinar will explore Making Social Stars!, a program tailored to the unique needs of students with dyslexia, helping them to understand, review, and concretize social skills. Many social skills programs do not consider the specific needs of these students, often including too much language or requiring a level of written output that may not be feasible for some students without adaptation. Students with dyslexia learn best through a micro-united, multisensory, spiraling-back approach, so the Making Social Stars! program was created in this model (Landmark Outreach, 2017). Making Social Stars! pulls from various social skills curricula, including Social ThinkingTM (Garcia Winner, 2023), as well as extensive faculty experience with the LD population. The program focuses on weekly lessons, quarterly events, and incentives to build community and showcase student success. Because the program is implemented throughout the school day, including communication with students’ families about program progress and updates, students are seen demonstrating their social skill abilities within and outside of the school community. All students can be thoughtful social thinkers, and Making Social Stars! enables students with dyslexia to learn the skills they need to be strong social communicators.
